USA: O&G Industry Professionals Receive Top Awards at Deepwater Operations Conference

Two offshore oil and gas industry professionals received top awards for their technical presentations at the Deepwater Operations Conference & Exhibition held at the Moody Gardens Hotel and Convention Center in Galveston recently.

The awards are given for the best presenter and best presentation among all of the speakers at the conference, held November 1 – 3, 2011.

The award for Best Presenter went to Mike Stark, Director, Offshore Pipelines, for Enterprise Products Partners. His presentation, “Anaconda Pipeline Extension Project,” covered the newly installed Anaconda Pipeline Extension, providing an overview of the solution and operations undertaken over 2 1/2 years to reestablish and extend the deepwater Anaconda Gas Export System after Hurricane Ike’s damage to shelf platform infrastructure.

Mike Stark is the Director, Offshore Pipelines for Enterprise Products Partners. Mr. Stark has overall responsibility for the company’s offshore pipelines and facilities installations, including the Anaconda Gas System. Mr. Stark has 38 years of experience in the offshore oil and gas construction and subsea industry.

The award for Best Presentation went to Tony Owen, of Helix Energy Solutions, for his presentation on “Emerging Technical Developments in Deepwater Operations.” The presentation discussed the techniques executed in the four major elements of the Helix Producer 1 Project Development — subsea, DTS, dynamic positioning, and production systems. It outlined the constructability and integration features of each and the operational aspects as they apply to a marginal deepwater field development.

Tony Owen attended Nichols State University and has 27 years offshore production industry experience. He has focused on emerging technologies while serving in leadership capacities on six major deepwater projects since 1998. His professional production and marine operation experience is centered on deepwater conception, designs, fabrication, integration, and installation and testing techniques.

The Deepwater Operations Conference & Exhibition, owned and produced by PennWell Corp., saw strong support from the deepwater operators in the Gulf of Mexico. Statoil was the conference host, and a number of operators, including Chevron, Shell, and Murphy Exploration & Production Co., supported the event as additional conference sponsors.

The 2011 conference program also included a high number of operator presenters. The keynote presentation was given by Oivind Reinertsen, SVP – Development & Production Offshore, Statoil. Throughout the next two days, sessions were led by industry leaders from Anadarko Petroleum Corp., Petrobras, Energy Resource Technology, Chevron, Shell, W&T Offshore, BP, Marathon Oil Company and many more.

PennWell is a highly diversified media and information company providing 45 print and online publications, 59 conferences and exhibitions, research, databases, Internet-based services and other information products to strategic global markets across a dozen industries. The goal of PennWell’s integrated marketing program is to provide a cost-effective mix of media that when integrated provides the ultimate in communication vehicles, including print media, digital media, maps, posters, conferences and events, research, custom publishing and more.

UTC 2017

The subsea industry has, as all other parts of the oil & gas industry, been seriously rattled by the most severe downturn in the hydrocarbon energy era. However, the realization of what hit us and actions to be taken to sustain a healthy and profitable future is still on-going – unfortunately with thousands of colleagues paying the price by losing their job as one of the most severe consequences. At this time, there are signs that we have reached bottom in terms of most industry indicators, but few experts expect a sharp recovery. Many seem to believe that a slow recovery is what the industry needs in order to avoid an unsustainable capacity build-up, as seen in the period after the financial crisis. Considering the uncertainty of what the future will bring, this year’s UTC Program Committee have decided to challenge all of us to present ideas, experiences, technological innovations, business models and execution models for how to shape our subsea future and explain how and why subsea is the future.
UTC welcomes abstracts based on the topics listed below. If selected, please consider writing a paper in addition to the UTC presentation. From 2017, UTC papers will be published in an international database.
