STC Hosts International Conference for IMEWE Submarine Project (Saudi Arabia)

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has organized the regular international conference for the submarine project (IMEWE). The conference, which included investor and regulation committees, took place in Riyadh, from the 16th to the 18th of July, 2012. Senior executives and representatives of corporate partners in the project attended the meeting.

The massive international project foresees one of the latest submarine cable technologies connecting East to West, extending from India to Europe, and passing through the Arabian Gulf region, with the city of Jeddah being one of the main stations in the project.

Dr. Homoud Mohammed Al Kusayer, Vice President of Wholesale at STC, welcomed the guests and participants in the conference, and stressed that these meetings contribute to developing the project in aspects pertaining to its capacity and performance to the highest global standards. He reiterates that these factors are key to sustaining the best interests of partners and investors in the project and to satisfying the clients.

The project, which was launched in Saudi Arabia last year, connects France with Italy, passing through Egypt and Lebanon from the west and India and Pakistan from the east, and passing through the United Arab Emirates. The project employs the best and latest optical fiber technologies for submarine connections, and offers a platform for international telecommunication companies between the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia. The project has great capacity and potential for future improvements that could foresee submarine cables connecting North America and East Asia to the Middle East, which gives STC the opportunity of fulfilling its long term goals through providing the suitable infrastructure and preparing it for future client demands.

STC continues to consolidate its leadership in submarine cable projects in the Middle East due to its importance to the company in particular and to the kingdom in general. This comes in correlation with the rapid growth in the telecommunication services sector in the kingdom, in particular internet and cable services. STC is considered a premier service provider for taking the lead in introducing new services to the kingdom such as “Verve” fiber optic service and 4G network coverage.

UTC 2017

The subsea industry has, as all other parts of the oil & gas industry, been seriously rattled by the most severe downturn in the hydrocarbon energy era. However, the realization of what hit us and actions to be taken to sustain a healthy and profitable future is still on-going – unfortunately with thousands of colleagues paying the price by losing their job as one of the most severe consequences. At this time, there are signs that we have reached bottom in terms of most industry indicators, but few experts expect a sharp recovery. Many seem to believe that a slow recovery is what the industry needs in order to avoid an unsustainable capacity build-up, as seen in the period after the financial crisis. Considering the uncertainty of what the future will bring, this year’s UTC Program Committee have decided to challenge all of us to present ideas, experiences, technological innovations, business models and execution models for how to shape our subsea future and explain how and why subsea is the future.
UTC welcomes abstracts based on the topics listed below. If selected, please consider writing a paper in addition to the UTC presentation. From 2017, UTC papers will be published in an international database.
