Teledyne Gavia AUV Aids in Search for AirAsia Plane

The Teledyne Marine Systems Group announced that its Teledyne Gavia AUV is aiding in the search for the downed AirAsia flight QZ8501 in the Java Sea. 

PT Java Offshore, in coordination with Balai Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT), will use Teledyne Gavia AUV to survey the area likely to contain the plane’s debris field. Teledyne Gavia has provided a Field Service Technician to support vehicle operations along with an advanced control module with survey grade side scan sonar, an advanced navigation module, and other vital hardware for the mission.

Personnel from Java Offshore and Teledyne Gavia arrived in Pangkalan Bun yesterday in anticipation of a nine to ten hour sail aboard a Coast Guard vessel today, January 6th, to the priority search area in the Java Sea.

Search efforts have been underway for several days to locate the airplane’s debris field, recover the passengers from the flight, and locate the plane’s cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. Although the plane is suspected to have crashed in relatively shallow water, poor weather conditions in the area have hampered search efforts.
