Velocious Completes Design and Testing of Class 5 Torque Tool, Australia

Subsea Engineering Specialist Velocious has recently completed the successful design and testing of a new generation of Class 5 Torque Tool.

The new generation Torque tool is the most compact available to the subsea industry with live Torque and Turns display at 652mm in length (horizontal orientation). The tool incorporates a zero backlash gearbox to significantly improve performance accuracy. Throughout operation, torque output and turns count feedback are simultaneously displayed on a dual line subsea display, which is integral to the tool.

Whilst ISO standards only require the tool to operate at up to 6,800Nm, the tool has been specified and tested at a maximum operational torques in excess of 7,500Nm accurate to within 5% of full scale torque. The increased torque capacity allows for use on a variety of additional interfaces that exist or are in the advanced stages of development within the industry.

Provision for remote hotstab connection allows the tool to be deployed in a workbasket with connection to the host ROV established subsea, saving on the critical operational time otherwise required to recover and re-deploy the ROV. The Torque Tool is entirely self-sufficient and needs no connection to an external control system, which further reduces cost, simplifies use and improves reliability.

Managing Director, Brett Silich commented “The design and successful qualification of this tool further demonstrates our Company’s commitment to providing best-in-class subsea equipment that is backed up by the level of aftermarket service our clients expect, all of our tools undergo the highest level of genuine operational scrutiny which incorporates years of hard-won lessons learned from within our specialist area of subsea activity.”

The design features of this tool are incorporated into the complete range of Velocious Torque Tools which span the entire range from Class 1 through to Class 7.
