TE SubCom Achieves 13 Tb/s Capacity on New Pan-Asian Subsea Cable System

TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. company and an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology, announced that it has successfully completed the second installation of its next generation coherent fiber optic subsea system and achieved 13 Tb/s capacity over a distance of 6,500 km without any regeneration.

The new system is a pan-Asian system with a longest path of over 6,500 km. This system joins TE SubCom’s first coherent system which was approximately 1,350 km. These two subsea systems demonstrate the next generation in coherent transmission that will enable both today’s capacity needs while being ready for future requirements.

The demonstration combined a specially designed underwater fiber plant as well as TE SubCom’s commercially available coherent C100U line card that features synchronous modulation for 100 Gb/s operation. The optical fiber used was optimized for coherent transmission and resulted in over 131,000 ps/nm of dispersion. TE SubCom’s C100U line card utilized Nyquist channel spacing to obtain 300% spectral efficiency. The C100U line card supports electronic dispersion compensation and uses patented synchronous modulation. The electronic dispersion compensation can enable systems up to 12,000 km without any optical compensation in the wet or dry plant. This combination provides unique capabilities for the benefit of system operators.

“We are very pleased with the combination of our C100U product and optical fiber cable demonstrated on our customer’s new system, proving once again that our technology enables cost effective, future-proofed solutions,” said Dr. Seymour Shapiro, vice president and chief technical officer, TE SubCom. “We believe that these results demonstrate the value of synchronous modulation technology to benefit our customers as they upgrade and deploy new systems.”

“We focused on making the C100U deliver market leading performance and cost per bit economics, and it has become our standard for next generation subsea systems with ultra-long haul capabilities,” said David Coughlan, president, TE SubCom. “The C100U is performing extremely well and our customers continue to be impressed with the unprecedented capabilities of our products. We look forward to incorporating these and other proven technologies into future systems.”
