USACE Galveston District Awards Geotechnical Survey Contract to Quaternary Resources

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District, awarded a small business contract in the amount of $106,871.81 to Quaternary Resources Investigations LLC for core drilling, soil sampling and laboratory testing at Freeport Harbor’s Dredging Placement Area One.

The contract will allow for drilling of suitable material for levee raising and repair to increase the capacity of the placement area for future dredging activities which is used to contain dredged materials from Freeport Harbor.

“This geotechnical services contract will allow us to locate clay that can be used to raise the crest of the perimeter levees about two feet,” said Clark Colquitt, a geotechnical engineer with the USACE Galveston District. “Raising the perimeter levee creates additional capacity to place material dredged from Freeport Harbor.”

According to Colquitt, this work directly supports the district’s mission of maintaining navigable waterways and benefits the nation by providing consistent and uninterrupted access for marine commerce to the Port of Freeport.

Work will be completed in approximately three months.

The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
