KVH Boosts Submarine Network

KVH, Asia’s information delivery platform headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, announced a new backhaul service in Japan that connects Shima Cable Landing Station (CLS) with Tokyo and Osaka through KVH’s Ethernet backbone network.

This new backhaul service, commercially available from December 15, 2014, will be offered in either 10Gbps or 100Gbps and augments KVH’s existing portfolio of backhaul services from Chikura CLS and Toyohashi CLS. Through KVH’s extensive domestic network, customers can extend these backhauls to reach 60+ major POPs and data centers across Japan.

Shima is the landing station for major submarine cable systems such as EAC, AJC, PC-1, Japan-US, and C2C. With the evolution of subsea capacity moving to 100Gbps levels, there is strong demand in Japan for high-speed connectivity from the major submarine cable landing stations – Shima, Chikura, and Toyohashi – to Tokyo and Osaka. KVH’s backhaul service addresses this demand, and targets global service providers and carriers who wish to connect their subsea capacity to key regions in Japan.

“With this new backhaul solution, along with our existing Chikura and Toyohashi backhauls, we now have direct access to all the major submarine cables networks to Japan,” said Machifumi Kashiwagi, Vice President of Product Management at KVH. “As part of an ongoing effort, we are continuously adding new routes to increase our network presence and to offer carrier diversity to customers who currently rely on a limited number of service providers in Japan.”

This backhaul solution is available as a 10Gbps and 100Gbps Ethernet service with an LR interface and is offered in short-term and long-term leases. This service is supported by industry-leading SLAs that include guaranteed mean time to repair and provisioning lead-time.
