Cinia, ASN Push C-Lion1 to New Speeds

Finland’s Cinia and Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) have completed tests on the C-Lion1 submarine cable system demonstrating a record-breaking capacity of 18 Tbit/s of data per fiber pair.

Finland gave a go-ahead for the C-Lion1 submarine data cable across the Baltic Sea in November 2014. The cable system is 1,172 kilometers in length and consists of eight optical fiber pairs with a total capacity of 144 terabits per second (18 Tbit/s x 8 fiber pairs).

The laying project of the Cinia C-Lion1 cable system started in Helsinki on October 12, 2015, and completed early this year when the cable reached its destination in Rostock, Germany.

Taneli Vuorinen, senior vice president at Cinia Group, said: “This result demonstrates Cinia’s ability to provide ultra-high speed connectivity services with lowest latency for data centers, enterprises and data intensive organisations. The C-Lion1 implementation project with ASN was successfully completed as planned, and the new connection is now set to fuel the development of the digital economy.”

Vincent Lemaire, vice president Technical Operations at Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, said: “This achievement showcased the performance of our open wet plant, which offers carriers a unique adaptive evolution for tuning the system capacity and performance throughout the life of a system. With the recent availability of our 1620 SOFTNODE, the ASN solution provides a distinctive networking model to cope with increasing end-user service demands.”

UTC 2017

The subsea industry has, as all other parts of the oil & gas industry, been seriously rattled by the most severe downturn in the hydrocarbon energy era. However, the realization of what hit us and actions to be taken to sustain a healthy and profitable future is still on-going – unfortunately with thousands of colleagues paying the price by losing their job as one of the most severe consequences. At this time, there are signs that we have reached bottom in terms of most industry indicators, but few experts expect a sharp recovery. Many seem to believe that a slow recovery is what the industry needs in order to avoid an unsustainable capacity build-up, as seen in the period after the financial crisis. Considering the uncertainty of what the future will bring, this year’s UTC Program Committee have decided to challenge all of us to present ideas, experiences, technological innovations, business models and execution models for how to shape our subsea future and explain how and why subsea is the future.
UTC welcomes abstracts based on the topics listed below. If selected, please consider writing a paper in addition to the UTC presentation. From 2017, UTC papers will be published in an international database.
