Swedish Navy Orders Kongsberg Equipment for New Submarines

The Swedish Navy together with SAAB Kockums has selected a sonar suite and bottom navigation technology from Kongsberg Maritime for installation on two A26 submarines, due for delivery no later than 2022.

According to the company, the contract was awarded through a tender process and follows a 2015 contract win covering similar systems for two Swedish Navy A19 submarines.

The Kongsberg technology package for the Swedish A26 submarines will consist of SA9510S mine avoidance and navigation sonars, EM2040 multibeam echo sounders, side scan sonars, sub bottom profilers and hydrographic echo sounders.

“The Kongsberg active sonar suite enables next generation submarines to operate safely in extreme shallow and confined water. This contract is an important confirmation that our technology is preferred when sonars are procured in open international competition,” said Thomas Hostvedt Dahle, director of sales for naval sonars in Kongsberg Maritime.
