Nord Stream 2, the developer of the twin pipeline to supply Russian natural gas to the EU market, released 90,000 young Atlantic salmon as compensation for potential temporary damage to fisheries during construction of the pipeline in Russian waters.
Nord Stream 2 released the salmon into rivers in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland.
This initiative is part of the Environmental and Community Initiatives Strategy developed by Nord Stream 2 for Russia, and is being implemented in cooperation with FGBU Glavrybvod and under the control of the Northwest branch of the Federal Fishery Agency.
“Nord Stream 2 is an important project for the Leningrad region. We are pleased to continue the joint work between the Government of the Leningrad Region and Nord Stream 2 on important matters such as environmental protection under the relevant cooperation agreement signed in February 2018. Activities on release of valuable fish juveniles will have a positive effect on the conservation of the biodiversity of the Baltic Sea,” said Sergey Serdyukov, chief technical officer at Nord Stream 2 AG.
Nord Stream 2 called on the assistance of the State Research Institute of Freshwater Fishing Industries (GosNIORKH) to study the condition of aquatic and biological resources in the Narva Bay and the Eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, the construction technologies to be used and any possible impacts.
Atlantic salmon and brown trout juveniles for Nord Stream 2 compensation measures are being grown at FGBU Glavrybvod facilities in the Leningrad region. The quality and average weight are determined and agreed by the Federal Fishery Agency.
Nord Stream 2 AG performs the releases of fish juveniles in a partnership with the company Fertoing. The programme of compensatory measures for 2018 provides for the release of a total of 170,000 juveniles of the two fish species into the Luga and Neva river waters at least twice in May.
The compensatory release of fish juveniles as part of the Nord Stream 2 project will continue in coming years, the company added.
