SINN Power Inaugurates Two WEC Modules in Greece

SINN Power has put into operation its second generation wave energy technology, supported by the German Federal Government, in Heraklion, Greece.

Following eight weeks of intensive work at the Port of Heraklion, assembling the mechanical components and establishing the electrical connections, SINN Power inaugurated the wave energy converter modules in Greece on Friday.

In the months to come, SINN Power will gather data on the functionality and electrical output of the modules under different wave conditions. Towards this goal, SINN Power plans to install three more modules on the breakwater wall in Heraklion, using the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and a recent investment by the Schweizer Kapital Global Impact Funds, the company said.

Besides the technical validation, the tests will allow more specific prognoses for the cost effectiveness of the newly developed technology. If the technology continues to work as expected, the first commercial off grid project is already in the pipeline, SINN added.

The inauguration initiates the final stage of development before the eventual deployment of the floating version of the modular wave energy converter.

SINN Power CEO, Dr. Ing. Philipp Sinn, emphasized that the setup only became possible because of the ongoing support of the local institutions, the Port Authorities in Heraklion and the University of Chania.
