The province is proposing its commitment to an open and transparent review of the Maritime Link project by Nova Scotia’s regulator become law.

Legislation introduced on May 9, by Energy Minister Charlie Parker would make it certain that the Maritime Link will be reviewed by the Utility and Review Board (UARB). Premier Darrell Dexter made that commitment last week.

“This project is a game-changer for Nova Scotia, and the entire Atlantic region. It is a complex project involving multiple governments and corporations and Nova Scotians need assurance that it will be built in their best interest,” said Mr. Parker. “The UARB review process will do that. The legislation ensures there will be a clear and transparent review process.”

The Maritime Link is an important component of the Lower Churchill development at Muskrat Falls in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“This project will provide access to reliable power at fixed rates for 35 years, while creating jobs and growing the economy,” said Mr. Parker. “The benefits go far beyond our long-term deal on the power, it will achieve energy diversity, security and stability.”

Draft regulations, which will be developed in consultation with the UARB, will be available for public comment this spring.
