Portuguese Hydrographic Institute Organise Seminar on Contribution of Hydrography

The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute, which is celebrating their 53rd anniversary, recently organized a seminar about “The contribution of hydrography to the development and security of coastal states” in Lisbon, Portugal. The purpose of this event was to allow the exchange of ideas and experiences about hydrography and nautical cartography between participants, as well as strengthen professional links.

Most of the seminar participants came from the Portuguese navy, oceanographic research institutes and university departments. Participants from the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) South Africa and Islands Hydrographic Commission meeting, which was held at the Hydrographic Institute prior to the seminar, also attended. Many distinguished speakers were in attendance including Professor David Wells, University of Southern Mississippi; Dr. Berta Cabral, Secretary of State Assistant to the Minister of National Defense; Admiral Saldanha Lopes, Chief of the Naval Staff; and Captain Robert Ward, President of the International Hydrographic Bureau.

Among the speakers was CARIS’ Charles de Jongh, who gave a presentation about the important role that hydrography has for the economic development of a country. For example, hydrography is the basis of maritime transportation, safety of navigation, underwater construction, defining maritime boundaries and coastal protection. Emphasis was placed on the importance of good maintenance and accessibility of valuable hydrographic information.
