Fehmarnbelt Environmental Monitoring and Consultancy (FEMO) consortium, has signed an approximately $50 million (DKK 300 million) framework contract with Femern A/S.

The Fehmarnbelt project will establish a fixed link between Northern Germany and Denmark across the Fehmarnbelt.

FEMO previously worked with other partners and Femern A/S to examine the environmental impacts from the construction works and permanent structures. As part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), FEMO conducted baseline monitoring for two years, as well as an in-depth impact assessment of three possible options: an immersed tunnel, a suspension bridge and a bored tunnel.

Over the next seven years, FEMO will monitor the environmental impacts of construction activities on the sea, air and land to ensure compliance with the limits set by the authorities.

Among others activities, FEMO will:

- operate a hydrographic monitoring system with two main buoys and several nearshore buoys;
- control sediment spill from the expected 18 million m3 of dredging works;
- monitor underwater sound and impacts on marine mammals.

In addition to DHI Denmark office, the FEMO consortium also includes Orbicon (Denmark), BioConsult SH (Germany) and MariLim (Germany). Sub-consultants on the project include DHI Germany, DHI-GRAS (Denmark), NIRAS A/S (Denmark), Institut für Technische und Angewandte Physik GmbH (Germany), WTM Engineers (Germany), Müller-BBM (Germany) and Fiskeøkologisk Laboratorium (Denmark).

FEMO’s work for the construction phase of the Fehmarnbelt project began 1st December 2014.
