NCE Subsea Joins JIP for Subsea Documentation RP

NCE Subsea is now a partner in the joint industry project (JIP) Subsea Documentation Standardisation.

This industry is initiated and managed by DNV-GL and the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association (NOROG). The aim is to develop a recommended practice representing the minimum set of documentation requirements for all major subsea components.

NCE Subsea partners and members will get the opportunity to influence the upcoming recommendations and guidelines for standardisation of documentation for subsea equipment.

Welcomed by the Industry

The documentation needed to ensure regulatory and operational compliance has grown considerably within the international subsea industry. It is time consuming, complex and costly to prepare and maintain the relevant documentation. Furthermore, requirements differ significantly between operators.

To address the issue, DNV-GL has launched the JIP to standardise subsea documentation. This initiative has been welcomed by the industry, with broad participation from operators, EPC(I) contractors and suppliers representing all parts of the supply chain. Standardisation will reduce the need to define and review technical documents, says DNV-GL.

Objectives and Scope

“The aim of this broad industry collaboration is to develop a standardised set of subsea system documents for designing, approving, manufacturing, verifying, operation and maintaining equipment,” explains the JIP project manager Jarl S. Magnusson of DNV-GL Oil & Gas.

The outcome will be a DNV-GL Recommended Practise (RP) aimed at establishing industry guidelines and recommendations required to document typical subsea products and systems, with an associated minimum set of documentation. Initially, the RP will provide a method for industry variations and options for add-on documentation. It will be linked to current sources of industry standard and practises. At a later stage, the RP may be included in industry guidelines, such as NORSOK, and/or as an amendment to relevant ISO standards.

Opportunity for NCE Subsea Members

NCE Subsea partners and members will get an opportunity to influence the development of the Recommended Practise for subsea documentation. NCE Subsea is inviting and encouraging partners and members to share experiences of what should be the absolutely required and necessary documentation for their type of subsea equipment and its related costs.

The next workshop meeting is 21-22 April, where NCE Subsea will continue on scoping the matrix of required documentation related to supplier’s equipment and products. The main objective is to identify the most relevant and standardised documentation. This process will strongly involve subsea equipment suppliers.

Participants in the JIP

The following companies participates or have participated in the JIP:

Aker Subsea AS, BrightPort, Centrica Energi, DEA Norge AS, Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA, FMC TI, GDF SUEZ E&P Norge AS, GE Oil & Gas, Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies AS, Lundin Norway AS, NCE Subsea, Norwegian Oil and Gas Association, Oceaneering, OneSubsea, PTIL, Statoil Petroleum AS, Subsea7, Subsea Valley and Suncor.

“Statoil is participating in this JIP because the RP has the potential to deliver a significant degree of standardisation, efficiency and increased quality. This will be implemented in Statoil through updates of our technical requirements,” says Jan Ragnvald Torsvik, Lead Engineer of Life Cycle Information at Statoil and co-chairman of the JIP.
