Hydrostor and UWindsor Develop New Underwater Energy Storage

The University of Windsor engineers Rupp Carriveau and David Ting developed a new way of storing energy underwater.

As the Windsor Star reports, the energy storage system is being built offshore Toronto Island in Canada.

The principle on which the storage works is that energy is used to compress air into marine bags and the water keeps the air compressed, and when electricity is needed all that is needed to be done is turn on a valve to get it, explained Mr. Carriveau.

Hydrostor and the University of Windsor started their collaboration on this project in 2010 which is expected to start operating in July or August after six months of testing.

The Windsor Star quoted Mr. Ting as saying: “To solve the intermittent nature of renewable energies, this is one of the most promising solutions.”
